How I trained Miss California 2010 for Miss USA 2010
This is the first in a series of articles exploring the exercises techniques I use to train my clients. Typically I train performance athletes like football players, pro surfers, water polo players and competitive fitness professionals. My clientele also consists of “average Joe’s” and housewives trying to get in and/or stay in shape.
But when Nicole Johnson approached me I had to implement a slight variation of my Jamcore Training System. She was preparing for the Miss California, not a figure or fitness show, but a traditional beauty pageant. This was a first for me. But the Jamcore System is so versatile it can be applied to anyone looking to improve their fitness level and performance regardless of age or gender.
Nicole was already very flexible from years of yoga, which cut down on the time spent activating and stretching her muscles. We were able to delve into specific exercises targeting major body parts like legs, glutes, arms and Abs. Most exercises were performed with bodyweight only, though occasionally we incorporated light weights. Regardless of the type, the work focused on elongating and contracting the muscles using functional core movements. Stability balls, medicine balls and resistance bands were utilized to further involve her core.

On November 18, 2009, Nicole Johnson of Westlake Village, CA realized her dream of becoming Miss California USA. After being first runner-up in 2007 she became even more determined to be the winner.
“After learning another Nicole Johnson was crowned Miss America in 1999, (when I was in 8th grade) I thought maybe lightening would strike twice and I too could be crowned someday. I got so close in 2007 I realized this was a real possibility!”
“Since the crowning moment I have made it my goal to work on restoring the reputation of the Miss California USA organization. Additionally, I will continue the forward movement K2 Productions has begun with the controversies of the previous year.”
In the summer of 2009 Johnson received an offer to work as a Sales Consultant for Mercedes Benz of Calabasas. This seemed like an unlikely career for a beauty contestant. Yet because Nicole is a fan of cars and couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy a passion, and practice working on her communication skills, she decided to take the position. Working in such a prestigious auto store allowed her to further develop her poise and speaking skills. After working for five months as a Sales Consultant, the dealership promoted Nicole be the Finance Assistant however since winning her crown she has stepped away from the position.
Nicole is an intensely focused 24 year old. In 2007 she graduated with honors from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. During her time at USC she focused on sports entertainment, looking to pursue a career in Action Sports; ultimately she dreams of one day becoming a pit reporter for Formula1 racing. She has had the unique opportunity to work for the NBA summer Pro-league as a liaison to the LA Lakers in 2006. The following year she was hired by ESPN to work as a Production Assistant at the ESPN ESPY Awards. She did such a great job she was asked to work following year as well.
While attending college Nicole tutored middle school students in the subjects of math and science. Her mother is a science teacher at Medea Creek Middle School in Oak Park and when at home from college she would often help out in the classroom. Nicole even has her Emergency Credential in hopes that her busy schedule would allow her to substitute teach in her spare time this year.
She enjoys working with children to encourage them to set and achieve their educational goals. She believes learning is a lifelong endeavor and if instilled young enough it will continue to help an individual throughout their life. “There are so many kids out there who need a mentor to look up to. Someone they can count on who gives them the guidance they need to succeed in life. I had my parents but that isn’t a reality for everyone. I want to make a difference in a child’s life. To show them how to achieve their dreams and that they really can come true. I am living proof!”
As Miss California USA, Nicole plans to teach future generations of women the importance of working hard to achieve their goals. “Honors and awards don’t just fall into your lap, you have to work hard to make them happen and stay focused all the time. Education is the key to working toward your goals. You have to know what you’re working for and where it is going to take you. Learn everything you can about what you need to do to get there. Then you will understand your challange. It is a life long lesson and we are constantly being challenged to cross the next line and keep moving forward.”
