Wii Fitness

April 21st, 2008

Nintendo’s Wii console is already a favorite among everyone from schoolchildren to middle-aged parents to nursing home denizens. The sensitive touch remote is revolutionizing the gaming industry, and now it’s poised to tackle a new area – exercise.

The new “Wii Fit” game, currently available in Japan, offers exercises in strength training, aerobics, yoga, and balance. Players stand on a balance board that allows them to move side to side, even participating in slalom or snowboarding races. The system also tracks your BMI and fitness level, and provides feedback on your athletic performance and stats as you progress.

In only four months on the market in Japan, it sold over 1.75 million copies and became the best-selling game of the year. Though the game has yet to prove itself as a sustainable fitness regimen, it offers 40 different activities that require coordination, balance, strength, and endurance. In our increasingly-media-obsessed culture, Wii Fit might be the answer to prevent a new generation of couch potato physiques. The game is expected to retail at $89.99 beginning May 19.

Dieters, You Are Not Alone

April 16th, 2008

According to a report by the International Food Information Council, over 70% of American’s went on a diet last year. Ironically, many dieters find themselves feeling so alone – like they are the only one struggling with their weight.

It is so easy to fall in a trap of feeling like no one understands or no one struggles quite like you do. The truth is 70% of people are struggling with their weight or they wouldn’t be dieting.

Whether someone is 10lbs or 100lbs overweight, being heavy is not fun. It may be easy to look at everyone who appears to be smaller than you and think they don’t understand, but just because you would be happy at their size doesn’t mean they are. The fact is they could be just as unhappy about their weight as you are about yours.Bonnie on the Beach

For some odd reason we like to categorize our self by weight or situation which only separates us more, leaving us feeling more alone. It’s easy to think other people have it better. Although that may be true in some cases I guarantee you there is someone, just like you, who has experienced great success. Unfortunately, these insecurities often prevent people from even attempting a diet.

We all know there are tons of myths surrounding fitness, weight loss and exercise. It is difficult sometimes to separate the facts from the fiction. Most people have a lot of common sense and know that losing dramatic amounts of weight quickly isn't possible, however some advertisers will use all of their powers to convince you of other miracle claims, and may often only reveal the truth in the fine print. In addition, there is always a lot of misinformation circulating around the general public regarding nutrition, exercise, weightloss and fitness. We chose some of the top myths we run into on a regular basis.

Myth #1 Drop 5 pounds in 5 days!

Quick Tip: What is Hypertrophy?

March 28th, 2008

If you lift weights a lot, chances are you’ve heard of muscular hypertrophy. Hypertrophy is defined as an increase in the size of a certain area, organ, or tissue without an increase in number of cells – in other words, it is an increase of size of individual cells, rather than an increase in the amount of cells. In muscle hypertrophy, it is associated with an increase in muscular mass and cross-sectional area. Interestingly, hypertrophy does not always correlate with increased strength – cells can grow bigger without becoming stronger. In order to maximize hypertrophy so you can increase your strength and power, programs that increase the volume (number of reps times number of sets) of resistance training are utilized. Consistent short-duration, high-intensity workouts are typically associated with producing hypertrophy, but exact workout plans vary for individuals.

WOMEN: Lower Your Risk for Heart Disease: A Multi-Pronged Approach

March 28th, 2008

You may have heard the news about a Belgian study that’s making waves around the globe: long-term use of oral contraceptives may increase women’s risk for artery buildup and heart disease. Experts caution that this is only one relatively small study done on high-estrogen-dosage birth control pills; however, there are some steps you can take right away if you want to reduce your risk for heart disease. Because of the huge amount of oral contraceptive consumers, more research is being carried out to further explore the relationship between contraceptive usage and heart disease. In the mean time, women are advised to lower their risks in other ways. A few steps to take include regular exercise, following a balanced and healthy diet, and being smoke-free; at this time, no one is advising women to stop taking the pill. And as always, your doctor can help put you on a plan that’s right for you.

Introducing MyFitTribe.com (beta)

May 1st, 2007

Okay everyone, after some deep thinking and some planning we are ready to take the JamCore Training philosophy and community to the next level. We have a vision to create an awesome new fitness community with so many features it will amaze you. I always wanted a place where health and fitness minded people could get together and really create a meaningful community. I also wanted a place where new people could go and learn about health and fitness and get support from a community without being intimidated by hardcore bodybuilders and product driven websites. Even professional bodybuilders stay away from most of those sites!

We are now in the beta development stage of a community that we can all be a part of! It’s a free fitness community called MyFitTribe.com. It includes everything that we started with the JamCore Training web site and so much more. I will give you a brief description of a few of the many features, but wanted to say that I am really excited that we all have a place dedicated to improving our lives.

Here are some highlights of the features (but really the thing that drives its effectiveness and growth is your profile and participation!). So what can MyFitTribe.com do? A lot, but here are some highlights:

    • A full fitness social network with your own profile, messaging, chat, buddylist and blog.
    • Ability for you to earn money through your personal blog
    • The ability to blog, join groups, create groups, make comments and ask questions.
    • Free access to the JamCore Personal Training videos and content.
    • Access to an ever expanding exercise, nutrition and health information and video database.

There is more but that gives you the basic idea, so setup your profile and checkout everything MyFitTribe.com has to offer.

The Team

Best,

Jamo
